Back in 2012, I joined Braintree as its Chief Technology Officer, and in 2014 became the General Manager. Since being acquired by PayPal in 2013, we have continued to drive rapid growth and change in our industry, resulting in many of us wearing multiple hats to stay nimble. While I held both roles for the past few years, it was only possible due to the extensive support from our Product Leaders as we quickly expanded our product portfolio and Engineering team. Which brings me to today’s exciting news.
After an extensive search, I am thrilled to announce that John Macilwaine is joining Braintree as our new Chief Technology Officer (CTO). In this role, John will lead all aspects of product development, including Engineering, Product Management, Design, and Production Engineering, all of which will continue to drive our technology efforts forward. John joins us from Lending Club, where he was CTO, leading its product development for the past four and a half years.

As this global role will have a significant impact on our products, team, and strategy, John’s 20+ years of experience as a CIO/CTO in the financial services industry driving innovation at scale for multiple teams is a perfect fit for Braintree. His lengthy and impactful history in financial services and payments includes senior leadership roles at Green Dot, Visa, and SunGard. John was selected as a finalist in the Innovation/Transformation category in the 2016 Bay Area CIO of the Year Awards sponsored by the Silicon Valley Business Journal and the San Francisco Business Times.
